Ranger
The friend of the wild. Hunter in chain.

“Ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee.”
The calling
In the first days, the man named every beast that walked and every bird that flew, and not one of them was afraid of him. That peace is mostly broken now. Wolves hunt the roads, great beasts trample villages, and all flesh has corrupted its way. But not all of it. In the deep woods and the high meadows there are still creatures that remember the first days, and there are still men and women they will trust.
The Rangers of the city of cedar are those people. They live at the edges of the world, in the misty forests and along the rivers, and they know every trail and every track. A red cardinal rides on a Ranger's shoulder, bright as a coal against the green. Later, if the Ranger is patient and kind, a great brown bear will choose to walk beside them. And when a Ranger is in desperate need, they do something no one in the gilded city would even think of. They ask the wild for help. Sometimes a wolf that has not turned, or a boar, or a stag with spreading antlers, steps out of the trees and fights at their side, freely, because it was asked.
The Ranger's weapon is the bow. They rise out of the morning mist with an arrow already flying, and the arrow does not miss.
In battle
You strike from where the enemy is not looking. Hidden in the mist, you loose a heavy arrow into an unwary foe, then move to its flank and send another where the armor is thin. Pitch arrows burn, snares slow and pin, and three arrows in quick succession each strike harder than the last. Your cardinal, or later your brown bear, fights beside you: the bird darts at the enemy's eyes and may blind it, and the bear holds a foe for a while with its great bulk. And when the fight is hardest, you call to a wild beast nearby, and it answers.
No calling deals more steady damage from range. And no Ranger ever fights alone.
Strengths
- The best ranged damage in the game, steady and deadly from hiding and from the flank.
- At peace with the beasts. Wild beasts that have not been corrupted leave you be, and you can track the creatures around you.
- Companions: a cardinal that blinds, later a brown bear that holds a foe, and wild beasts who come when you ask.
- Snares and slows that pin your quarry where your arrows can find it.
- Hidden in the mist. Move unseen and choose when the fight begins.
Weaknesses
- Fragile up close. A Ranger caught in melee without its bear is in trouble.
- Position matters. Your best shots need hiding, the flank or the enemy's back.
- Your companions can fall. When your bear or cardinal is struck down, it takes time to call them back.
- Corrupted beasts will never answer you, and in some places, nothing wild remains to ask.

Choose the Ranger if
You love the bow, the hunt and the wild places of the world. You want a bright bird on your shoulder, and one day a bear at your back, and you want to know what it feels like when a wild creature steps out of the trees because you asked. The old peace between mankind and beast is almost gone. The Rangers keep what is left of it.
