Trapper
The one who waits in the lurking places. Hunter in chain.

“They lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.”
The calling
The road from the Border Valley to the gilded city runs through a long stretch of reeds and willow, and travelers who know it walk faster there. Something has been setting snares in that stretch. Iron gins with teeth, hidden in the grass. Nooses in the reeds. Every so often a merchant does not arrive, and every so often a crow is seen sitting on a fence post, watching the road, with something bright in its beak.
The Trappers of the gilded city are patient hunters, and their quarry is anything that walks into their ground. They do not ask the beasts for help. They break them. A Trapper's crow was taken from the nest and raised on scraps from the Trapper's hand. A Trapper's black bear was chained as a cub until it forgot it had ever been free. They obey the whistle because they have never known anything else.
Trappers fight with paired daggers coated in venom, and they never fight fair. They wait in the lurking places, unseen, until their quarry steps into the snare, and then they strike from behind with a blow meant to end things in a single moment. If the first blow does not kill, the poison will. If the poison does not, the bleeding will. And if the quarry somehow runs, it will run into the next trap.
In battle
You prepare the ground before the fight begins. Spiked gins slow every enemy who blunders into them, and hidden snares root a whole company of foes in place. Then you strike from hiding for tremendous damage, your venom seeping into every wound and your bleeds draining the life out of anyone who escapes the first blow. Your crow, or later your black bear, fights beside you: the bird pecks at the enemy's eyes and may blind it, and the bear holds a foe for a while with its bulk. When an enemy staggers near death, you finish it.
No calling strikes harder in the first moments of a fight. By the time the enemy understands what is happening, the Trapper has already won.
Strengths
- The strongest opening blow in the game. Strike from hiding and end a fight before it begins.
- Venom and bleeds that keep killing after you have moved on.
- Traps that slow or root a whole company of enemies, and poisoned foes take more damage from them.
- Companions: a crow that blinds, later a black bear that holds a foe.
- A finishing stroke for enemies near death.
Weaknesses
- Fragile up close. If the ambush fails and the enemy reaches you, chain will not save you for long.
- Needs preparation. Traps take time to lay and must be placed before the enemy comes.
- Less steady damage than the Ranger over a long fight. Your strength is the first strike.
- Demanding to play well. Hiding, positioning, traps and timing all reward a cold, patient mind.

Choose the Trapper if
You love the ambush, the perfect first strike, and the satisfaction of a plan carried out exactly. You want to choose the ground, lay the snare and wait. But know the cost of the calling. The Trapper's beasts serve out of fear, and so, in the end, do the Trapper's masters. Somewhere in the hills there are Rangers who once walked this road, and their birds sing now.
