Beguiler

The silver tongue of the gilded city. Voice of the company in leather.

Beguiler of the fallen

“The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart.”

The calling

The first weapon ever used against mankind was not a blade. It was a sentence. A soft voice in a garden asked a single question, and with it the whole world was lost. The Beguilers of the gilded city have studied that voice for a thousand years, and they have learned its craft very well.

A Beguiler fights with words. They carry only a slim dagger and a small idol at the belt, and they need nothing more. A whispered rumor spreads through an enemy's ranks like rot through fruit. An accusation, shouted at the right moment, stops a warrior dead in confusion. Flattery, sweet as honey, wraps a foe in invisible chains, and suddenly the enemy's own champion is fighting for the Beguiler, glassy-eyed, smiling, bound by words. Murmurs of discontent drain the strength out of an enemy company and pour it into the Beguiler's friends.

In the courts of the gilded city, Beguilers are the most valuable servants a lord can own and the most dangerous. They advise kings. They ruin rivals. They know exactly what everyone wants to hear. The one thing they never hear is the truth, because the truth is the one thing no Beguiler can ever quite believe again.

In battle

You control the fight. You lull dangerous enemies into silence with soft words, so the company can fight them one at a time. You bind a foe with flattery and set it against its own allies. You spread rumors that wound the enemy's mind and leap from one foe to the next as the whispers spread. And all the while you steal power from your enemies to feed your friends, and spur your fighters to strike again and again.

A Beguiler's battles are often won before the enemy realizes they have started.

Strengths

  • A charmed foe that fights for you. Bind an enemy with flattery and turn its strength against its friends.
  • Control. Lull, stun, spellbind and scatter enemies in fear, one at a time or in whole crowds.
  • Feeds the company's power with whispers that drain it from the enemy.
  • Rumors spread. Your wounding words can leap from one foe to another on their own.
  • Spurs your fighters, giving them more chances to strike twice with every swing.

Weaknesses

  • The charm can break. A bound foe may throw off its chains at any moment, and when it does, it turns on you.
  • Weaker blessings for the company than the Psalmist's songs.
  • Fragile. Leather, little health, and few ways to save yourself when enemies break through.
  • Demanding to master. A great Beguiler juggles a charmed pet, lulled foes and spreading rumors all at once.

Choose the Beguiler if

You want to win with your wits. You love control, misdirection and the moment when an enemy's champion turns around and attacks its own side. But remember whose craft you have learned. The serpent beguiled, and the serpent lost, and every word he ever spoke was a chain. A Beguiler who one day speaks the plain truth may find that the chains were only ever words.
