Psalmist

The harp of the faithful. Voice of the company in leather.

Psalmist of the faithful

“When the harp was played, the troubled one was refreshed and made well, and the evil spirit departed from him.”

The calling

The harp was first strung in the gilded city. A son of the first murderer's line made it, and the pipe beside it, and his children have played them in palaces and pleasure-houses ever since. But a long time ago, someone carried a harp up into the hills and played it at the altar instead. The song was different there. It did not flatter. It praised. And when it was finished, the weary stood up straighter, and the frightened were not frightened anymore.

Those who play that way are called Psalmists. They are singers and players, poets and encouragers, and they go to war with a harp on their shoulder and a songbird on their wrist. Their music is not a spell. Psalmists do not bend minds or weave illusions. They sing to their Maker, and they sing to their friends, and the song is answered. Strength comes back to tired arms. Power wells up in empty hearts. Hands move faster, as if the song were keeping time for them.

And the enemy, hearing it, is struck with awe. A charging raider stops dead in the road, staring, his weapon forgotten. A whole war-band stands frozen in wonder. The sound of trumpets crashes through an enemy camp and throws it into confusion. The Psalmist does not do this. The Psalmist only sings. What falls on the enemy is sent.

In battle

You are the reason your company never runs dry. While you play, every companion regains power faster, and the more varied your songs, the more the gift grows. You quicken the hands of your fighters, pour strength into a weary healer, and freeze dangerous enemies in awe so the company can deal with them one at a time. Your songbird flies at your side, strengthening your songs and singing some of them back.

Playing a Psalmist well is like leading the whole battle in song. Every company that has fought beside a good one remembers the sound.

Strengths

  • Keeps the whole company's power flowing. No calling restores more.
  • A new song. Varying your songs builds verses that strengthen your gifts, rewarding a thoughtful player.
  • Holds enemies in awe, one at a time or a whole crowd at once, so the company can choose its battles.
  • Quickens your allies, making their hands strike faster.
  • Strong against spirits and the fallen, with songs that drive unclean things away.
  • Your songbird, who strengthens your songs and sings some of them back.

Weaknesses

  • Modest damage. The Psalmist wins fights by making others better.
  • Little to save itself. When enemies break through, a Psalmist depends on its friends.
  • Awe is fragile. Any blow breaks it, so a careless companion can wake the enemy you just stilled.
  • The songbird can fall. When it is struck down, your songs lose their extra strength until you call it again.
  • Demanding to master. A great Psalmist is always thinking two moves ahead.
